ABOUT THE COMBINE
NYC Media Lab Combine seeks to coordinate the community of faculty, students, entrepreneurs and media executives and technologists that participate in the Lab to build a ‘spinoff engine’ focused on commercializing media technologies from universities. The program is supported by funding from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and through the support of NYC Media Lab’s corporate membership.
The goal of the Combine is to match new technologies emerging in university labs with a program and resources to commercialize them. Key to the proposition is mentorship and market access from technologists and executives at NYC Media Lab member companies.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are seeking NYC university-based teams that endeavor to start new companies. We intend to fund teams that are experimenting with technologies that advance the future of machine learning, AI, voice and audio, brain-computer interfaces, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and more. We are interested in teams that are focused on:
new forms of communication
new systems for the creation, distribution or consumption of media
new methods for understanding, analyzing or evaluating media
Our program will empower teams to adopt the "lean" startup method to search for and develop a business model for their startup concept.
Curriculum: NYC Media Lab Combine provides a structured "flipped classroom" curriculum for entrepreneurial teams. The curriculum includes video lectures, "field research" for customer discovery, and weekly presentations that show evidence of understanding of the fundamentals of market validation and business model generation. Combine teams will conduct over 100 customer interviews in the program. Teams will develop a business model canvas in the program.
Community: The cohort-based program is a major benefit of the Combine experience. Teams support and learn from each other. The commitment to the other teams in the program results in the overall success and strength of the cohort.
Mentorship: Mentors from NYC Media Lab's network of innovation executives, faculty experts, and Combine alumni contribute to the growth and development of the Combine's startup teams.
Funding: Teams are also awarded $10,000 in grant funding when accepted into the program. Following successful completion of the program, teams are eligible for additional follow-on grant funding.
